2006 Meeting Minutes

Earth Day Americorps Project Events: Earth Day Americorps Project Events:  In an innovative and unique project for Earth Day 2006, the Seattle Federal Executive Board IELC and the EPA Regional Innovation Council sponsored ten AmeriCorps volunteers to work on environmental projects improving the health of Puget Sound.  The volunteers teamed up with multiple federal agencies and community partners, including nongovernmental organizations and the recently announced Puget Sound Partnership. The volunteers documented (in short digital film clips) the multiple federal agency collaborations working to protect the health of Puget Sound. The AmeriCorps activities were designed to encourage community involvement and lace together the activities that are helping protect this natural resource. The projects generated good media attention about the number of federal agencies, state agencies and community groups partnering to improve the health of Puget Sound. You can view the short video clips on the EPA Region 10 website by clicking here.  To learn more about Americorps, go to http://www.americorps.org/   Photo's from Earth Day:  Americorps Team and SFEB   and  SFEB Earthday Booth  and Americorps Recycling Electronics.

April 22, 2005 – Earth Day!   IELC members participated in multiple successful Earth Day Activities and Events Five Earth Day events were highlighted.

Ø      The Westlake event, sponsored by King County, was a big hit and hundreds of people in attendance.  Several FEB agencies shared tent space with EPA Region 10 and had a prominent location.  We displayed the new FEB banner with the logo “Collaborating for Effective Government since 1961”. There was good public participation and a lot of information was exchanged on federal environmental practices.

Ø      Federal Aviation Administration had a ‘Swap Meet’ in which over 11,000 supplies were transferred, representing nearly $14,000 in savings!  This was obviously a big success and FAA plans to do this again next year.

Ø      US Army Corps of Engineers had a large Earth Day Exposition in which 15 vendors participated including: Ft. Lewis DPW, Seattle City Light, Puget Sound Action Team, Seattle Parks, Cascade Recycling, King County, Seattle Audubon, Washington Water Trails Association and others. Colonel Lewis provided the opening speech in which she outlined the role of the corps and the federal government in promoting sustainable practices and behaviors.  Two well-attended work parties were also organized for the following day at the Urban Horticulture Center and Hamm Creek.

Ø      GSA had an earth day booth in their cafeteria with a drawing for CFL’s that generated much attention.

Ø      National Park Service had three days of events for their “Earth Week” with guest speakers such as Brenda Peterson on ocean conservancy; an Environmental Issues and Trade Panel, and; a Washington State Farmworkers’ Perspective on Environment and Agriculture Panel.  They also have a “Sustainability Tip of the Month” sent out to all employees.  Other agencies agreed that this was a great idea and NPS will share their file with us.

IELC Meeting for March 31,  2005 - Navy Region NW Sustainability Plan: US Navy Region NW hosted a session on their recently released Sustainability Program for 2004.  By focusing on sustainability, Commander Navy Region Northwest will ensure its ability to provide for and support Operational efficiencies, sailor quality of life, access to diverse training environments and to natural assets and healthy communities.  Continued planning for coordinating Earth Day activities.  Click here to download the Navy Region NW  Sustainability Program Goals.  IELC Meeting Minutes for March 31, 2005
